While the phrase, “It’s the journey, not the destination” is sound advice, the truth is that to many people dedicated to reaching great success in life, the destination is top of mind. And for good reasons; the stakes are high, they’ve made real commitments and they’re putting a lot on the line — maybe everything.
Is it possible to bring your focus on the journey and the destination into a healthy balance? I believe it is when you become aware of and begin monitoring the greatest sign of imbalance between the two: isolation.
Isolation is a sign that your focus is primarily on your destination and you’re not paying enough attention to the quality of your journey. It’s a growing problem in our fast paced society. The symptoms of isolation should not be ignored: reduced drive, reduced effectiveness, and reduced joy. Chronic Isolation is thought to cause serious health problems.
The answer to isolation isn’t always about connecting with others right away. Sometimes it’s more about connecting with yourself. For instance, taking a well day, reading a good book or getting a massage. When you’re ready to connect with others, ask yourself if you’re interested in a large group, small group or one-on-one time with a special friend. Coming out of periods of isolation may take a few days to switch from a focus on your destination to refocussing on your journey.
An intention to bring your journey and destination into balance is one of the quickest ways to reduce a sense of isolation. But don’t stop there, calendar your connection time — with others and yourself. In planning your journey in this way you’re choosing to be healthy all the way to your desired destination. You understand that true victory in success is about caring for yourself and those who matter to you along the way.
