How Decades of Change Have Reshaped Workplace Communication

Posted on July 22, 2026 by admin

INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Joan Hibdon.

The Joan Hibdon Commentaries

On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price interviewed Joan Hibdon.

Many leaders believe workplace communication has declined over time. I see it differently. Communication hasn’t declined or disappeared. It has certainly changed and in some cases,  evolved, with each decade introducing new technology opportunities along with new leadership challenges.

In this conversation, we’ll explore the major shifts that have shaped how we communicate at work—from the hierarchical organizations of the 1950s and 1960s, to the performance-driven cultures of the 1980s, the rise of email in the 1990s, digital overload in the 2000s, and today’s hybrid workplace.

Each era has fundamentally changed how information flows, how trust is built, and how leaders engage in difficult conversations. While technology has made communication faster and more accessible, it has not made meaningful conversations or communication easier.

We’ll discuss today’s leaders and their unique communication challenges, what has been gained and lost over the decades, and how leaders can create cultures where honest dialogue, constructive feedback, and trust become everyday practices rather than difficult events.

Understanding where we’ve been and where we are helps to provide valuable insight into what effective leadership communication requires today.
