Ford to Offer Connected Mobile Service at No Charge

Posted on December 20, 2019December 20, 2019 by David Jackson

Drivers of Ford Transit vans are in for a treat, because FordPass, which is powered by FordPass Connect, is now available at no charge. So, what is FordPass? It’s a mobile platform that lets drivers start, stop and unlock their vehicles remotely, as well as scheduling maintenance check-ups and chatting with Ford Guides.

The service was introduced in 2016 and has grown steadily since. It was previously available as a trial subscription but is now available at no charge. That makes Ford the first automaker to offer its remote features and FordPass Connect service on a complimentary basis to all customers on select model year vehicles that are equipped with FordPass Connect.

The FordPass App

Owners of select Ford vehicles need to download the app to enable the available services. They include remotely locking and unlocking their doors, starting the engine and climate control, check fuel levels, tire pressure, oil level as well as the vehicle’s GPS location.

Drivers of mobility vans will find these features handy, especially the ability to start the vehicle and climate control. Depending on where the van is located, the owner can turn on the air or heat from a comfortable location instead of sitting in a car with extreme heat or cold. Ford Pass even allows owners to schedule maintenance at participating Ford dealers and planning start times along with other features.

The vehicle must have a modem. So, the app won’t work on all vehicles. Buyers of used Ford vehicles will need to check to see if that vehicle is modem equipped for the service to work. Also, the connected services require the availability of an AT&T wireless network

In addition to the features outlined, the FordPass app will also provide critical Ford-specific information, including the location of nearby dealerships, service hours, recall notices, and more. All current Ford models offer standard 911 Assist, which works with a driver’s cell phone to automatically dial 911 if the vehicle’s airbag deploys. The system also provides GPS coordinates to help first responders find the vehicle.

Owners Can Earn Rewards Points

As part of Ford’s customer loyalty program, the app features FordPass Rewards. This program allows members to earn points, which can be redeemed for vehicle servicing with the dealership. Customers need to sign up for FordPass using the app or by going online to Ford. It is predicted that the FordPass service will provide access to the Amazon In-Car delivery service in covered areas. In some areas, owners will have access to a Sparkl cleaning service to clean Ford vehicles that can be accessed within the app.

Another feature that has bee recently added to the FordPass mobility app is an advanced parking feature, which will allow users to find, secure, and pay for parking in garages across more than 160 US cities. It will also provide in-app information regarding where open spots are available, that will update in real-time. Payment will be via FordPay, which stores credit and debit card information.

It will be a much-welcomed feature, as one Harris Poll recently found that commuters going to work or school spend an average of 1- hour per week looking for parking.
