Was the Sports Illustrated Super Bowl Event a Farewell Party?

Posted on March 8, 2024March 8, 2024 by admin

INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE.

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Jeremy Murphy.

Price and Murphy discuss the bizarre Sports Illustrated Super Bowl party.

The controversy surrounding the Sports Illustrated Super Bowl party centered around the perceived dissonance between the magazine’s changing priorities and the lavishness of the event.

Here are the key points:

  • Shifting focus: After being acquired by Authentic Brands Group in 2019, Sports Illustrated witnessed significant staff reductions in its journalism department. Critics viewed this as a shift away from the magazine’s core journalistic function towards a more entertainment-focused approach. “https://www.techdirt.com/2024/01/24/sports-illustrated-implosion-perfectly-encapsulates-the-ugly-ongoing-collapse-of-u-s-journalism/“
  • Lavish party: Despite the downsizing in its journalism department, Sports Illustrated continued to host a luxurious Super Bowl party, featuring celebrity appearances and musical performances. This seemingly contradictory allocation of resources sparked criticism.
  • Critics’ argument: The critics argued that the resources spent on the party could have been better utilized to support the remaining journalists or invest in creating high-quality sports content. They saw the party as emblematic of a prioritization of superficiality over the magazine’s original journalistic mission.

While the exact budget figures haven’t been publicly disclosed by Sports Illustrated, reports estimate that the 2024 Super Bowl party cost nearly $3 million. This information comes from TMZ: https://www.tmz.com/2022/02/03/sports-illustrated-super-bowl-party-cost-nearly-3-million/.
