The Best Places to Rent a Cabin in the U.S.

Posted on January 1, 2020 by Chris

While planning a weekend getaway to the city is fun, many of us want to get away from all the noise and go somewhere a bit quieter. That’s why cabins are a great choice when you want a vacation away from the bustling city. Renting a cabin is a great way to explore a new destination and get in touch with nature.

Why Rent a Cabin?

Cabin rentals are ideal for travelers who want to get away from the city. If you already live or work in an urban setting, then the last thing you want to do for vacation is spend your time in another crowded city. So rather than staying at a hotel, why not stay in a fully furnished cabin with nature right outside your front door?

The other great thing about cabins is that they provide the perfect combination of comfort and nature. You can have all of the adventure and outdoor views that you would get on a camping trip. At the same time, you have the luxury and comfort of staying in a house rather than a tent.

Besides, the number of destination options is endless. There’s something for everyone when it comes to cabin rentals, including:

  • Mountain top cabins near ski slopes, hiking routes, and biking trails
  • Cozy wilderness cabins to sit and relax by the fire
  • Lakeside cabins for breezy, paradise-style vacations

Top Places to Rent a Cabin Around the US

Luckily, there are dozens of destinations to rent a cabin in the U.S. Whether you want adventure or relaxation, lakeside or mountaintop, touristy or remote, there’s something for you. Here are our top picks for places to stay in a cabin.

1. The Colorado Rockies

The Rocky Mountains of Colorado are a top pick for many travelers looking to stay near the mountains. This destination promises stunning views and plenty of wildlife.

Not sure which season to stop by for a visit? Any will do! There’s wildflowers galore in late spring, famous Colorado sunshine in the summer (or any time of year, actually), changing aspen leaves in the fall, and enchanting snowfall in the winter.

Renting a cabin in the Rockies also puts you in close proximity to all of the state’s favorite recreational activities. There’s biking, rafting, skiing, climbing, and so much more.

We recommend booking a cabin along the front range. 1 in 4 Colorado visitors spends time in the mountain towns of the front range and Pikes Peak region, and we know why. This area bumps up against the spectacular mountain range while also putting you close to the state’s most charming western towns. You can’t go wrong renting a cabin near the Royal Gorge for easy access to activities, views, and Colorado historical sites.

2. Along the Michigan Peninsula

Staying along the Michigan Peninsula is another great destination for travelers looking to get away from the city and closer to the outdoors. With access to beautiful forests and three of the Great Lakes, there’s plenty of nature here!

Also, who wouldn’t want to stay in one of the area’s friendly little towns? You can hang out with the ever-gracious midwestern locals for a weekend away from those uptight city dwellers.

We recommend you rent a cabin on Mackinac Island. It’s located right between the upper and lower peninsula. The island is completely car-free. Talk about a getaway!

3. The Smoky Mountains

No doubt you’ve heard some relatives or friends reminisce about their childhood road trips to the Smoky Mountains. There’s a reason this eastern mountain range has been popular for decades.

The area is undeniably beautiful. Filled with green forests, waterfalls, and mist-covered mountains, it’s hard not to be captivated by this area. Renting a cabin in these mountains puts you right at the heart of it.

Another reason why the Smokies are a no-fail option is that they are suitable for a variety of travelers. There are trails to bike and hike if you’re outdoorsy, or there are plenty of fun shops for touristy types.

4. Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a west coast classic. Many people find that they just can’t get enough of the town’s laid back vibe. Rent a cabin here, and you’ll probably see why.

The best times of year to check out this area are probably summer or winter. During the warmer months, you can go kayaking, boating, or stand up paddleboarding on the lake. During the winter, though, there’s great nearby skiing.

A tourist favorite is the Winter Olympics Museum. We have to admit, traveling back in time to the 1960s Winter Olympics really makes you see this already cool town in a brand new light.

5. The Badlands

Head up to South Dakota to really get in touch with your nature roots. This area of northern U.S. offers cabin rentals that are remote in the best possible way.

At the same time, there’s plenty to do if you choose to stay near The Badlands. There’s Mount Rushmore for the classic tourist trip as well as outdoor activities for a more adventurous itinerary.

In addition, the area is packed with history. Take a trip to one of the many Native American historical sites to learn about the cultures and customs of tribes native to the area.

6. Georgia Mountains

The northeastern Georgia mountain region is a lesser-known cabin rental spot. If you want a destination with a higher local to tourist ratio, this is probably a safe bet.

This region provides a unique balance between luxury and nature. There are many wineries and spa getaways for those who want a leisurely stay. However, there are also plenty of outdoor activities such as rafting, hiking, and biking for those who crave more activity.

Whether you plan to spend the trip hiking mountains or sipping Merlot, leave room in your itinerary to tour the region’s famous filming locations. Called the Hollywood of the South, Georgia has been used as a backdrop for countless shows and movies, including The Walking Dead and Black Panther. A behind the scenes look is sure to make your vacation memorable.

7. Mount Rainier National Park

To really feel like a mountain man or woman, take a trip to the peaks of Mount Rainier National Park. This park is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. It’s no wonder considering that Mount Rainier itself stands over 14,000 feet above sea level. Talk about a view!

However, the surrounding mountains are just as stunning as the legendary volcano. Therefore, there are plenty of opportunities to see waterfalls, wildflowers, and glaciers no matter where you go exploring.

Start Planning Your Cabin Getaway!

The U.S. is filled with hidden gems for you to plan a cabin getaway. Hillside or lakeside, there’s no better way to get close to nature on your next vacation than by renting a cabin. Choose from any of our top picks for a memorable trip.
