My 5 tips for transforming our master bedroom

Posted on March 25, 2021April 9, 2026 by David Jackson

Over the years our master bedroom was a real thorn in our side.

It was something which was left until the end of our renovation journey, which is quite surprising when you consider how long we spend in it!

Nevertheless, 2020 was the year everything changed. We didn’t have a huge budget but that didn’t matter, I was determined to do whatever I could, with the little money we had, to get the most from the most neglected room in the house. Here is how we did it:

  • We spent money on a professional decorator.
  • We bought new flowers every couple of weeks.
  • We got rid of the clunky wardrobes.
  • We changed the window dressing.
  • We reviewed the lighting.

I’ll now go into each of the above points, to hopefully provide the inspiration that was clearly missing from my life in the years leading up to this project!

Firstly, the only ‘real’ money that we spent on this project was via a professional decorator. We had tried to do it ourselves on many occasions and followed the umpteen YouTube videos that are out there describing the process.

Unfortunately, it was to no avail. Our room frustrated us. It had brush strokes over the skirting boards, with the odd patch on the ceiling as well. As such, the first thing we did was to choose a warm color and pay someone to do the job properly. The result? All of the above frustrations are eradicated.

Next, it was about turning to accessories or specifically, Avas Flowers. I’ve seen Avas Flowers around the neighborhood for some time now but took the plunge after looking through their Avas Flowers Pinterest page.

Suffice to say, I’m massively impressed. They’ve added freshness, color and life to a room that was previously missing all three. I now try and make an order every few weeks to keep my room feeling like the above on a permanent basis.

The next thing we did was tackle the wardrobes, exploring alternatives like a Walk In Bedroom Closet, even though it wasn’t feasible within our budget. We wanted built-in wardrobes, but we couldn’t afford them. At the same time, we hated our old, peeling wardrobes that sat soullessly in the corner of the room. They look like they had been stuck there without a second thought.

As such, we moved them. They were placed in a spare bedroom and in their place came a clothes rail. This surprisingly adds more style, but it also very practical. Clothes are no longer thrown on the floor after a long day of work, they hang on the rail and make the world of difference.

Another change we made focused on the window dressing. Up until this point we had a metal Venetian blind, and it looked awful. It had warped, but it also wasn’t practical. Every morning the sun would beam through the slats, making us feel even more frustration with the room!

Instead, we turned to curtains. It shuts out the light on a morning and makes the room incredibly cozy.

Finally, let’s turn to the lighting. We were always conscious about this potentially eating our budget, so we treaded very carefully. Instead of replacing fittings, we changed bulbs. We went from a white light, to a warm light, and it suddenly made our room much more inviting. We also added a table lamp to one of our bedside cabinets, which is now something that we use solely for light on most evenings.

All of the above cost us less than a few hundred dollars, but the effects, believe me, are completely worthwhile and has changed our perceptions of one of the most important rooms in our house.
