This Technology is a Game Changer in Medication Administration

INTERVIEW ON THE PRICE OF BUSINESS SHOW, MEDIA PARTNER OF THIS SITE

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed Sebastian Seiguer .

Sebastian Seiguer  of emocha of Mobile Health visited with the Price of Business Show.

According to his website, “emocha is a clinical adherence service that improves medication adherence through video technology and human engagement. We leverage a CDC-endorsed model called Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) to support both patients and providers.”

The mission of emocha is to support every patient at every dose, with a clinical adherence service that addresses the three major barriers to adherence: behavior challenges, medication problems, and social determinants of health. emocha ensures that patients take every dose of medication, offering daily support through human engagement and video technology.

Because fifty percent of patients do not take their medication as prescribed, patients who are nonadherent to medications are 2.5 times more likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days due to exacerbations of chronic disease and ineffective treatments. Increased utilization, high medical expenditures, low quality metrics, and poor outcomes for patients result in a $400 billion problem for healthcare industry stakeholders across the country.

emocha leverages a proven solution from a hidden corner of the healthcare system to engage patients throughout treatment. Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) is the practice of watching a patient – typically in-person – taking every dose of medication. A CDC-endorsed model, it is the only technique proven to consistently secure adherence rates greater than 90 percent. DOT addresses behavior, medication problems, and social determinants through daily interaction.

Patients use emocha’s mobile app to video record themselves taking medication, with the ability to report symptoms or side effects. Adherence coaches use emocha’s HIPAA-compliant web platform to review videos, engage with patients, and measure dose-by-dose adherence. Providers and case managers receive adherence reports to triage patients and drive clinical decision-making.

Physicians utilize emocha with identified patients who need support, and emocha’s onboarding team enrolls patients via phone or in-person. Medication review is performed by a board-certified pharmacist. Patients use emocha’s secure mobile app to submit daily recorded videos at every dose, report side effects or medication problems, and ask questions. Throughout this process, emocha’s clinical adherence team confirms adherence, corrects technique, addresses medication challenges, and provides daily support. emocha offers targeted clinical intervention and escalation to providers, and comprehensive individual & population analytics to each customer.

emocha effectively scales all elements of DOT through a daily, medication engagement, beginning with a remote pharmacist comprehensive medication review. Throughout the program, patients participate in video check-ins, daily human engagement & support, medication problem interventions, and financial & social incentives. This holistic and integrated service enables care teams to reduce hospital readmissions and lower costs, as they are notified about concerning side effects in real time, address patient needs before they become expensive problems, and achieve better outcomes through better adherence.

emocha is clinically validated through multiple peer-reviewed studies: data shows that patients using emocha achieve up to 94% dose-by-dose adherence. emocha offers one integrated program across a spectrum of chronic & infectious diseases including asthma, COPD, diabetes, opioid use disorder, transplant, hepatitis C, and tuberculosis. The platform is being used by public health departments, hospitals, health centers, and managed care organizations across the globe.
