construction worker protective gear

Most important protective gear for construction workers

Posted on June 29, 2020July 6, 2020 by David Jackson

Construction is one of the more dangerous jobs a person can work. Accidents at worksites lead millions of workers to hire an industrial accident lawyer each year. There are a lot of benefits to this line of work, however, as long as you stay safe.

A main component of construction safety is personal protective equipment (PPE). These items protect various parts of your body and are designed for different tasks. These are the most important pieces of protective gear for construction workers.

Helmet

It should go without saying that a helmet is one of the most important pieces of protection inside and outside of construction. For workers, its main purpose is to protect them falling objects. Roofing tile, debris, tools, and more can all cause severe damage when they strike someone on the head.

Goggles

Next in line is a quality pair of goggles. Construction sites often have harmful debris flying around from bulldozing and welding, all of which could enter the eye and cause damage. Goggles ensure you can see without a single spec of debris reaching your eyes, protecting your vision.

Boots

Boots are a must in construction, but you need the steel toe variety. Falling objects are just as dangerous to your feet as they are your head. With a steel toe, you can ensure your foot is protected. They also protect you from stepping on glass, nails, and other sharp objects.

Gloves

A construction workers hands are constantly dealing with various types of materials, some of which can cause cuts and lacerations. Not all gloves are created equal, and they won’t protect you from the most severe of injuries, but they will save your hands from undue pain during the workday.

Earplugs

The equipment used in construction is louder than most people realize. Many workers find themselves hiring a construction accident lawyer over loss of hearing when their employer fails to provide earplugs. Being in a constant state of high decibel noise all day will cause damage. So, make sure you keep those earplugs in for your safety.

Falls

Finally, and most tragically, construction workers run the risk of fall injuries. The higher the fall, the more devastating the results. Harnesses and nets save countless lives every day in the construction industry. You can’t purchase these yourself, but it’s vital that your employer provide and install them.

When Employers Don’t Care

It’s tragic, but there are construction companies across the country who simply do not care to provide the protective equipment their workers need. Some even trick employees into thinking accidents are their fault, bullying them into never seeking legal aid.

Your employer is responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace free from serious hazards. When they fail to do so, they can be held legally accountable for your injuries. If you’ve been injured and this is the case, it’s vital that you hire legal representation to seek the compensation you deserve for your employer’s negligence.
