Navigating the Mac Interface: Tips for First-time Mac Users

Posted on July 30, 2020 by The Times USA News

Computer users will often face the dilemma of choosing between Windows and Mac, two of the largest operating systems existing in the market. Both have their similarities and differences, but the general interface and overall user experience vary significantly, leading to preferences among users. You will often hear about specific OS users being apprehensive about switching to the other one.

While switching to the other OS may require some adjusting or getting used to, it can help you decide which will be more suitable for your applications, needs, and preferences. Between the two, Windows is undoubtedly more prevalent in the market since the Mac OS is limited to Apple products. Thus, if you have been a long-time Windows user, using a Mac device for the first time may feel like a completely new environment.

However, the two platforms are not as drastically different as they may sound, and it may be stylistic differences that you need to familiarise yourself with. If you have recently made the switch from Windows to Mac, here are a few tips that you should consider trying to maximise the Mac OS features. While you are at it, make sure to also search the term “Mac Specialist Near Me” to have a go-to person to find if your device ever runs into problems.

Utilise the Trackpad

Windows touchpads are much more limited in function compared to Mac trackpads, so now is your chance to explore the many things you can do with yours. Aside from the usual scrolling and clicking, you can perform so many multi-touch gestures for easy navigation. For example, pinching with two fingers allows you to zoom in or out while spreading your thumb and three fingers apart will show your desktop. Coming from a Windows device, you will certainly be surprised at the many things you can do with an Apple trackpad, so try to utilise it as best as you can.

Search with Spotlight

As you get used to the Mac interface, the Spotlight feature may become your best friend. This function allows you to search for virtually anything from your computer storage or the web. With Spotlight, you no longer have to open your browser or Start menu before making a search. All you do is click the command button + space bar, which should launch the Spotlight search bar and allow you to type away.

Find a Mac Specialist

Since Mac computers operate differently from Windows computers, you will need to find a specialist to help with repairs or fixes if you run into any hiccups. A simple search for “Mac Specialist Near Me” should generate a list of reputable professionals who can service Apple products in your location. See to it that you find someone well-versed with the Mac OS and hardware to ensure that your device gets the attention it needs. The warning signs for issues may also be different for Mac devices, so hiring a Mac specialist will assure you that all important parts are inspected.

Work with Split-screens

Split-screen features are growing increasingly common among gadgets today, so if you are using a Mac for the first time, the good news is that you can also do this on your device as well. All you have to do is open the two applications, click the green button on the upper left corner, then select “Tile Window to Left of Screen” or “Tile Window to Right of Screen.”
