What Is a Toner Used For; Plus, the Best Pick for Your Skin Type

Posted on December 2, 2019December 2, 2019 by David Jackson

Understanding skin toners and how to choose them

Most of us have an ever-growing collection of skincare remedies to help us look great, stay healthy, and slow the effects of ageing. Everyone knows what cleansers do, and you probably have a good understanding of moisturisers – but what about toners?

If you’re unsure about how toners work, read on to find out how they can help you keep your skin healthy and beautiful!

Why use a toner?

Applying toner should be the final stage in your facial cleansing routine. A good toner removes impurities and dirt that might still remain after washing your face. A well-formulated organic toner can also supply your skin with nutrients and moisture. It’s a little bit of extra self-care that can leave you with the glowing, post-spa feeling.

Different skin types, different toners

There’s a wide range of toners available out there and each one is unique – just like skin types. The best toner for you will depend on the qualities of your skin and what you want from your skincare routine.

Some toners smooth skin, others tighten it up, while some are designed to balance oil production. The difference lies in the ingredients used for each toner and you should select carefully according to the needs of your skin.

Some of the most important ingredients to keep an eye out for are:

Salicylic acid for acne-prone skin

If you have oily skin that tends to break out in pimples, look for a toner rich in salicylic acid. Toners with this ingredient will gently exfoliate your skin and remove dead skin. Salicylic acid will also boost cell growth and encourage collagen production, which will make your skin firm and smooth.

Lactic acid for combination skin

If you have combination skin – where some areas of the face are oily and some are dry – lactic acid can be really helpful. This healthy acid hydrates dry skin gently without aggravating sensitive skin. It doesn’t thin your skin out either, as some acidic ingredients can.

Glycerin and essential oils for dry skin

If you have dry skin, make sure you avoid toners containing alcohol, as it will dry out your skin even more. Instead, keep an eye out for skincare products containing glycerin. A gentle moisturising agent, glycerin will hydrate your skin and also soften it like an emollient.

Essential oils can also be very helpful for dry skin – nourishing and smoothing your face, and also providing a lovely aroma. Test the oils on a small patch of skin first though, as they can cause reactions in some people.

Aloe vera or vitamin C for mature skin

As we age, our skin requires special care. Use aloe vera to soothe, moisturise, and repair your skin. Products rich in vitamin C are also helpful

Coenzyme Q10 or hyaluronic acid for normal skin

For normal skin, choose a toner containing coenzyme Q10 and hyaluronic acid. Coenzyme Q10 is an amazing antioxidant and hyaluronic Acid will hydrate your skin for a softer look and feel.

Bentonite Clay or Witch Hazel for oily skin

If your skin produces too much sebum and gets oily, try products with bentonite clay. This nourishing clay can control shine and purify your skin, which will help with congested pores. Witch hazel is an ideal active ingredient is also really helpful for oily skin. It’s a natural astringent that will tighten your skin and shrink your pores.

Algae or Amino Acids for sensitive skin

Aloe vera is great for sensitive skin because of its soothing qualities, so it’s a must in your toner. Algae will also bring benefits for your skin because it is packed with amino acids meaning it can detoxify your skin and remove impurities that cause irritation.

Pair your toner with other organic products

Toners are amazing but they should be on the icing on your skincare cake. You should make it part of a well-balanced skincare routine including an effective cleanser, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen.
