House GOP Ready to Challenge Democrats on “Medicare for All”

Posted on April 30, 2019April 30, 2019 by admin

Republicans are confident that they can win the “Medicare for All” debate. “Medicare for All” would be an enormous strain on the economy and would lead to serious increases in taxes. In addition, the United States is the leading innovator when it comes to health care, producing more technology and medications than any other country in the world. “Medicare for All” has the potential of undermining that position globally.

House republicans clearly want to debate this subject and allow the American people to see what this policy will do to the health care system and to the consumers of it. Their confidence was clearly seen today when the leading Republican on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady (R-TX) and the top Republican on the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Devin Nunes (R-CA) sent a letter to Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) calling for a Committee hearing on H.R. 1384, the “Medicare for All Act of 2019.”

The lawmakers wrote to Chairman Neal:

“Given that the Committee on Ways and Means has jurisdiction over this bill,we call on you to promptly schedule a hearing on H.R. 1384.”

“Republicans—the party of Medicare Advantage, the Medicare prescription drug benefit, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the original law protecting coverage at work for people with pre-existing conditions—stand ready to work with you to fix the broken status quo.  A public accounting of H.R. 1384 is necessary to inform the working families and seniors we represent to the risks of their health coverage under this proposal.”

Several leading Democrats have made this a referendum issue in the 2020 Presidential election, especially its most progressive wing. However, the “devil is in the details” and a robust hearing on the topic would bring those to light, according to Brady and others.
